The news in Quebec in 2008: Politics and sports in the spotlight

Influence Communication releases its annual news summary for 2008

Montreal, December 17, 2008 - Influence Communication today released its overview of the news in 2008. État de la nouvelle : Bilan 2008© analyzes the trends in the news as well as all of the news items published or broadcast in Quebec between January 1 and December 11, 2008. For the second consecutive year, Influence Communication has also made public the results of similar studies it conducted among the media elsewhere in Canada and abroad.

In Quebec in 2008, 39.88% of the news was dominated by federal and provincial politics and sports. In December, the political crisis in Ottawa ranked first among media events over a seven-day period, with 11.1% media prominence. The federal election, the Olympic Games in Beijing, the incident involving Patrick and Jonathan Roy, and the Julie Couillard (Maxime Bernier) affair rounded out the five stories most covered by the media in Quebec in 2008.

In Canada, the stories that garnered the greatest media attention over the past year were, in order of prominence, the Canadian federal election, Canada in Afghanistan, the economic crisis, the NHL playoffs, and the Canadian dollar.

Internationally, it will come as no surprise that the American presidential election ranked first among news stories carried around the world in 2008. The war in Iraq, the economic crisis, the Olympic Games in Beijing, and the war in Afghanistan followed (in that order) to make up the five stories most focused on in the 160 countries targeted by the study. The Omar Khadr affair was the Canadian story reported on most by the international media in 2008.
